<image:title>Our Stories | - Shaping Safer Alcohol Environments in Ōpōtiki - Over the past year, Healthy Families East Cape (HFEC) has been actively involved in alcohol licensing mahi in Ōpōtiki. We had a clear focus on reducing harm by changing how decisions are made.</image:title>
<image:caption>Ōpōtiki has a high number of alcohol outlets for a town of its size. Alcohol-related harm continues to affect the safety of our whānau, public spaces, and the wellbeing of tamariki and rangatahi. For a long time, the hapori has expressed their concerns about the sheer amount of outlets, long trading hours, and alcohol visibility. However, the licensing system often defaults to standard conditions, especially once objections are withdrawn or mediated, this means there is little that actually changes on the ground. Healthy Families East Cape’s role is to help interrupt this pattern. HFEC supported kōrero from the Ōpōtiki hapori using surveys, and feedback that captured real experiences of alcohol harm in Ōpōtiki. That information was then used to support formal objections and submissions on alcohol licence applications to the Ōpōtiki District Council. Our submission included objections that were backed by local data, previous community rangahau, and clear links to whānau safety, equity, and Te Tiriti o Waitangi obligations.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Stories | - Walking With the Tides: Keeping Safe and Connected This Raumati - During Raumati whānau head to the moana and awa to dive for kai, cool off, and reconnect. Heoi, beneath these moments of joy is a challenge that many whānau face and that is preventable drownings, particularly among tāne and tamariki Māori.</image:title>
<image:caption>From 2015 to 2025, local data shows clear patterns that most incidents occur in Raumati, during high-energy lunar phases like Tangaroa and Rākaunui, and in places of whakapapa. These are not random events, they move in rhythm with the taiao. It is important to recognise that water safety isn’t just a physical skill, it’s a relationship with the taiao. It is more than observing high or low energy phases or planning when to plant and fish. It’s a living system of awareness through observation that helps us anticipate change, manage risk, and prevent harm. When we understand these rhythms, events like accidents on or near the water become more predictable and preventable. Mainstream water-safety systems often frame drowning as an individual accident or a lack of skill. In Te Tairāwhiti, the data tells a deeper story. For Māori, wai is not just a physical space it is a living Atua. The maramataka tells us that tides, winds, energy, and human behaviour all flow together. When we read data through this lens, risk becomes visible, predictable, and preventable. This is where Taurikura is changing the system. Taurikura shifts water-safety thinking from teaching people to swim to survive toward confidence and connection with wai. It reframes prevention as cultural reconnection and a system where timing, taiao, and whakapapa guide behaviour. Healthy Families East Cape holds space for whānau to share pūrākau and kōrero tuku iho about wai, bridging those lived experiences with evidence. Through this systems lens, prevention becomes about the collective. Whānau are encouraged to: use the maramataka to plan when to gather or rest open every engagement with wai through karakia and intent practice buddy systems and shared supervision embed local pūrākau into everyday safety practice so that respect replaces rules. Rather than focusing on deficit, Taurikura celebrates existing knowledge. Our tīpuna already designed systems that kept people safe through observation, timing, and practicing tikanga by having a reciprocal relationship and connection with the taiao. By reviving these, whānau reclaim both safety and tuakiritanga.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Stories | - Kaupapa Wellbeing: Strengthening Hauora in Te Tairāwhiti - In the lead up to Mental Health Awareness Week, Healthy Families East Cape celebrates Kaupapa Wellbeing. This is a wāhine-led movement co-created with Ngā Wāhine Māori Toko i Te Ora Te Tairāwhiti, Māori Women’s Welfare League Te Tairāwhiti. The kaupapa is rooted in mātauranga Māori, the strengths of our wāhine, and reimagines pathways to collective hauora across our rohe.</image:title>
<image:caption>From the beginning the wāhine shared aspirations for thriving whānau and resilient hapori. The kaupapa was guided by Te Whare Tapa Whā and maramataka, where they strengthened each taha of wellbeing in ways that drew on mātauranga Māori, creativity, and connection. Connection through whanaungatanga and being involved was something our wāhine valued most. Having their experiences as women, as kuia, as mothers and as nannies valued, and ensuring we continue to have opportunities to be involved in decision-making of our lives, of our environments and of our community was spoken of highly when it came to maintaining mental wellbeing. Whānau desire systems and services that are mana enhancing through each stage of the process. The Kaupapa Wellbeing journey has seen the development of resources to strengthen each taha, which included Te Whare Tapa Whā activity cards, maramataka reflective journal, strategies to support good sleep habits, and affirmation cards inspired by maramataka. These tools enabled the wāhine to nurture their own wellbeing and share this knowledge with whānau, hapū, and iwi. The data and lived experience show the strength of this collective approach. There were over 100 wāhine who participated in Kaupapa Wellbeing, 6 workshops were held over twelve months, and 4 drop-in workshops which created spaces for ongoing learning and connection. Across all wānanga the wāhine identified the importance of kotahitanga in light of the isolation they faced during the Covid-19 pandemic restrictions. Opportunities to haka together and learn new waiata to fill their kete in preparation for hui and kaupapa were seen as essential. Laughter and fun with whānau and friends was spoken of fondly, with the knowledge that this aspect of life is important for our hinengaro and mental wellbeing. Being confident enabled our wāhine to stay positive and optimistic about life, especially in the face of challenges. “"I like to have a katakata with my friends and my whānau. In fact, my whānau drive me nuts but I love them and know how important they are and their presence is for my hinengaro. They keep me sane”, said one wahine. Another said that “staying positive about things, even when its hard. Its hard to be resilient, but that’s about all we have sometimes here on the coast.”</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Stories | - From the Fringe to the Centre: Privileged to Stand in the Kaupapa - Opinion piece by Pou Whakawai George Kingi</image:title>
<image:caption>Performing at Tamararo this year was layered. Physically, I questioned if I was even fit enough to be there after a recent injury. Emotionally, I felt on the edge, having missed the months of practices and the bonds the rōpū had built. Still, I was accepted in, carried by that “next man up” mentality from sport. I missed performing with my teina, but I knew I was privileged to stand in the kaupapa. The moment that stayed with me wasn’t on stage, but it was during a practice run through of our bracket. Our kaitātaki wahine picked up my baby while leading a waiata. She grabbed his hand, encouraged him to wiri, and he smiled the whole time as he watched her sing. That simple act made me want to involve him more in kapa haka, to let him be surrounded by that sound, movement, and wairua. On the day, I didn’t think about it being the one year anniversary of Kingi Tūheitia’s passing. Looking back, though, I see the honour in standing and performing haka and waiata that connect us to both Tauira mai Tawhiti and Tainui. There’s continuity in that, a thread of whakapapa binding us across generations. This year also marks 50 years of Te Wiki o te Reo Māori. For me, an urban-born Māori who grew up with little engagement in culture, that milestone shows what stubborn aroha can achieve. Our kaumātua and kuia fought to keep te reo Māori alive when it was on the brink of loss. Because of their determination, my tamariki are now growing up in a world rich in te reo Māori. It’s proof that systems can shift when people fight for what matters to them. Looking ahead another 50 years, my hope is that my tamariki and mokopuna won’t have to search for reo and that it will simply surround them. At home, in kura, in hospitals, on the sports field. Not an optional extra, but the everyday rhythm of life. Kapa haka is a vital part of that journey. It’s where reo, tikanga, and wairua live together. Even when I feel on the fringe, kapa haka draws me back into the centre. The reo isn’t just spoken; it’s sung, shouted, and embodied. That keeps it alive for me and strengthens my connection to identity. When I think about Tamararo, 50 years of Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori, and Te Arikinui Kuini Nga wai hono i te po with her first Koroneihana, they are all threads of the same story, a story of resilience and renewal. Tamararo shows kapa haka continues to evolve, Te Wiki o Te Reo Māori proves reo is resilient, and the leadership of Te Arikinui signals a future that feels fresh and accessible to rangatahi while grounded in tradition. From language loss to reo revival, from kaumātua holding the line to tamariki laughing in reo, from the passing of a King to the first year of a Kuini, these kaupapa weave together to show that Māori culture is not just surviving but it is regenerating. My hope is that my babies inherit a world still full of awe and wonder.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Stories | - Taurikura – He pō whakakotahi i te whānau mō te ara whakamua - In 2023, 687 pēpi were born here in Te Tairāwhiti, where 23 of Aotearoa’s 460+ kōhanga reo are based. This shows a strong commitment to te reo Māori from birth. Te Tairāwhiti has strong foundations for early swim education, however culturally grounded options remain limited. While providers like Comet, Enterprise Swim, and Kiwa Pools offer valuable programmes, they’re delivered entirely in English and often come at a cost that’s out of reach for many whānau. The Ngāti Pēpi kaupapa stands out as a supportive option for whānau with high needs tamariki, though it’s only available to a specific group. This highlights a clear opportunity and need to expand accessible, reo Māori swim education across the region.</image:title>
<image:caption>Taurikura began as a response to this need. HFEC has been working alongside Comet Swimming Club, Māori Womens Welfare League and our whānau involved in Taurikura to explore a te ao Māori approach to water safety. An approach that reflects our whakapapa, maramataka, mātauranga Māori and our hononga to wai. One Taurikura parent says that "The connection to wai is a part of our whakapapa connection and has strengthened our whānau wellbeing." Another states that they are "Definitely noticing the maramataka phases and the energies playing out through our tamariki. The Mutuwhenua phase is coming to a low energy and that showed through strongly when none of the tamariki wanted to say their names in our waiata. They all wanted to do their own thing in this session."</image:caption>

This month, we are putting the spotlight on Bella Paenga</image:title>
<image:caption>Read more below as George, our Healthy Families East Cape Practice Lead gets to know Bella. Kei te aha? Kei te pai awau. How did you get your name and what does it mean? I am named after my nanny, it means beautiful in another reo. She was from Tokomaru, the Chatham Islands and Flores Island off the coast of Portugal. What was your favourite story, book or movie growing up? I liked the story Charlotte’s Web, the friendship, loyalty and sacrifice between Wilbur the pig and Charlotte the spider. What is the best piece of advice you’ve ever been given? If we are true to ourselves, the happier and healthier we will be. What is something everyone should know about your community? How fortunate we are in Rangitukia for our taiao, marae, and spaces where we can come and connect, share and be involved in things like wānanga kai. What's one of the most special or memorable moments in your mahi, and why does it stand out to you? My first time up Hikurangi – I had expectations of green whenua, busy bird life, a flourishing site to behold but what I was greeted with seemed quite the opposite. Baron like almost. This was a tohu for me and made me think deeply about giving back to the whenua in my own way. What legacy do you want to leave behind? I would love my tamariki and mokopuna to know that they belong to this whenua in Te Tairāwhiti. They are connected to this place through me and that is important to know because this place has been supporting many people and things for a very long time. Who is a community champion you know that is awesome for their community? I always talk about Frazer Taiapa. He opened my eyes to holistic growth and wellbeing. Growing kai, people, connections, minds, kaupapa the list is endless. He has helped me recognise what mana motuhake looks like in practice and understand that everyone is different and that is kei te pai.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Stories | - Hui Tāne 2025: Restoring Identity and Uplifting Tāne Māori - Tāne Māori are leaders, protectors, and knowledge holders. This is a taonga tuku iho from across generations, they have carried responsibility, wisdom, and a connection to our taiao and whakapapa. Hui Tāne 2025 is a celebration of this legacy and a space for it to grow further.</image:title>
<image:caption>Held over three days, Hui Tāne is a national wānanga that uplifts tāne Māori through kōrero, cultural practices like whakairo, mau rākau, and workshops grounded in te ao Māori. It offers a space of high trust, where tāne can reconnect with their strength, purpose, and each other. At Hui Tāne, whānau-first mindsets showed up strong. Many tāne came not just for themselves, but for their whakapapa. Kōrero flowed naturally in porohita no stage, no mics, just shared presence. Through kai, shared mahi, and being together there was a space for intergenerational connection. The kōrero shared are not just stories, they’re systems insights. Tāne connect through movement, story, and action, not just services. The kaupapa supports tāne to lead from a place of identity and connection. As Hone Harawira so powerfully says: “We need our brothers to know we care, and we will be here for them, hakoa kōwai, hakoa nō hea.” This is the heartbeat of Hui Tāne, and it echoes the mahi of Healthy Families East Cape.</image:caption>
</image:image>

<image:title>Our Stories | - Hui Tāne 2025: Restoring Identity and Uplifting Tāne Māori - This approach reflects the kaupapa of Healthy Families East Cape, where we believe the solutions to chronic illness and social inequities already exist within our whānau, hapū and iwi. Our mahi is about strengthening what’s working, making the invisible visible, and creating environments that enable our people to thrive.</image:title>
<image:caption>Healthy Families East Cape walks alongside communities to identify what’s working, what matters, and where collective action can make the biggest impact. Having Pou Whakarei George Kingi involved in Hui Tāne reflects this commitment of supporting a kaupapa that honours mātauranga Māori, builds intergenerational connections, and strengthens tāne Māori from within. “This hui reminded me that I don’t need to arrive perfect, just present. The value I carry isn’t in what I do or say, it’s in how I show up, hold space, and keep learning.” Says Pou Whakarei George Kingi. Hui Tāne is a celebration of strength, a reconnection to whakapapa and purpose, and a call to action for unity and growth. By championing this kaupapa, Healthy Families East Cape helps to restore the vital roles tāne Māori play in leading change for their whānau, communities, and the motu. Hui Tāne is a reminder that when our tāne stand strong in who they are, whānau, hapū, iwi and communities thrive as well. <image:title>Our Stories | - Te Hā Kura: Restoring Te Hā on our Collective Pathway to Wellbeing in Tairāwhiti - At Healthy Families East Cape, we recognise that the environments where people live, learn, work, play and connect have a profound influence on health and wellbeing. Our approach is grounded in systems thinking and prevention, with a focus on shifting the conditions that contribute to chronic illness and health inequity.</image:title>
<image:caption>Te Hā Kura is an example of this approach in action. It is a regional collaboration committed to reducing harm from nicotine and alcohol, by restoring and protecting the hā, the sacred breath of life, for our people and whenua. This kaupapa is rooted in whakapapa and inspired by Kurawaka, the place where Tāne-nui-a-Rangi breathed life into Hineahuone. It calls us to reimagine health not only as the absence of disease, but as a reflection of balance, connection, and collective wellbeing. We know that the challenges we face in Tairāwhiti are complex and intergenerational. High rates of smoking, vaping and hazardous alcohol use are not only drivers of preventable illness and early death, but also symptoms of deeper, systemic issues. Māori communities, in particular, continue to carry the burden of these harms due to longstanding inequities shaped by colonisation, social exclusion and structural disadvantage. These challenges cannot be addressed in isolation. Te Hā Kura brings together a diverse network of partners who are working across different parts of the system. This includes Gisborne East Coast Cancer Society, Ngāti Porou Oranga, Te Whatu Ora Tairāwhiti, Gisborne District Council, Hāpai Te Hauora, Asthma and Respiratory Foundation NZ, the Heart Foundation and Tāne Ora Tairāwhiti. Each brings their own expertise, reach and relationships. Together, we are aligning our efforts, sharing insights, and building collective accountability for outcomes that matter to our communities.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Stories | - He Anga Whakamua: A Strategic Pathway for Comet Swimming Club - Comet Swimming Clubs moves to celebrate a community-led vision for tamariki, wai, and whānau wellbeing through their new strategic framework.</image:title>
<image:caption>In the spirit of kotahitanga and community-led transformation, Healthy Families East Cape is proud to celebrate its collaboration with Comet Swimming Club in the development of a new strategic framework, one that honours the club’s legacy while laying down bold aspirations for its future. This framework is more than a plan. It is a shared vision grounded in the voices of tamariki, whānau, kaimahi, and guided by the collective power of community. The connection between Healthy Families East Cape and Comet Swimming Club began through Taurikura, a kaupapa that reflects the warmth and guidance of ancestral knowledge, creating powerful connections between whānau, pēpi, and te taiao through culturally grounded water-based activities. In a region like Tairāwhiti, where there has been a gap in learning environments for tamariki under five in wai that reflects te ao Māori, Taurikura has created a whānau-led space that builds both water confidence and wellbeing. Taurikura weaves together tikanga Māori and mātauranga Māori through maramataka-aligned learning, engaging whānau through the lens of kori (movement), physical activity, and holistic hauora. Through interactive, whānau-centred sessions in the wai, the kaupapa nurtures both emotional and physical strength, strengthens intergenerational ties, and helps tamariki build a deeper relationship with te taiao. This kaupapa, and the relationships it fostered, laid the foundations for the deeper collaboration that followed. The Healthy Families East Cape team, already supporting systems change across the region, brought their expertise in co-design and whānau-centred planning to help shape a strategy that reflects Comet’s kaupapa from the inside out. The connection has been further deepened through Healthy Families East Cape Manager stepping into the role of Chair of Comet Swimming Club. Her dual insight has helped ensure Healthy Families East Cape's own strategic direction remains grounded in values, systems thinking, and community leadership. She continues to champion not only the club’s aspirations, but the values of Taurikura and the vision of Healthy Families East Cape. “Comet Swimming Club has always been more than a swimming club, we are a whānau. This new roadmap is a celebration of our past, a reflection of our present, and a bold commitment to our future. It’s been a privilege to walk alongside our whānau, kaimahi, and tamariki to reimagine what swimming can look like for our Tairawhiti community.</image:caption>

This month, we’re proud to put the spotlight on... Ron Taiapa. A trusted maramataka expert and cultural leader, Ron’s deep knowledge of ancestral timekeeping and whakapapa makes his feature especially fitting for this Matariki edition, a time of renewal, and realignment with te taiao. <image:title>Our Stories | - Empowering Indigenous Knowledge at the Global Indigenous Astronomy Symposium </image:title>
<image:caption>Healthy Families East Cape is excited not only by the power of mātauranga in global dialogue, but also to be part of this international conversation, where we’ll be engaging with Indigenous thought leaders from around the world. This includes hearing from key-note speakers such as Associate Professor Duane Hamacher, one of the foremost non-indigenous experts in Indigenous astronomy. His work, based on trust and long-standing relationships with Indigenous communities, reflects the growing recognition of Indigenous knowledge in the scientific world. “This symposium is not just an opportunity to present, but also to learn, connect, and bring those lessons back to our people,” Jade adds. “This isn’t just about attending a symposium, it’s about shifting power toward Indigenous-led models of well-being that are relational, preventative, and intergenerational.” The event is also a critical moment in shifting the paradigm of how Indigenous knowledge is viewed within mainstream science, and a powerful move towards systems change. Historically, Indigenous knowledge and mātauranga has been relegated to the margins or treated as a curiosity, rather than as a foundational part of systems thinking. At the IAU Symposium, Jade will highlight how mātauranga Māori is not symbolic, but it is a rich, actionable knowledge base that can guide us in creating sustainable, culturally grounded systems that nurture collective health and balance with the environment. Our tīpuna left us with a profound understanding of the natural world, and an understanding that connected us to the stars, the environment, and each other. By revitalising this knowledge, we can build a future where our communities thrive in harmony with the world and those around us. Healthy Families East Cape is proud to be part of this ongoing movement, contributing to global systems change by placing indigenous leadership at the forefront of science and wellness. Follow us on social media and visit our website for updates as Jade prepares for his haerenga. As we lead into Matariki, let’s celebrate our mātauranga, our whenua, and our people on the global stage, as we continue to uplift Indigenous leadership in science and innovation.</image:caption>

<image:title>Our Stories | - FestPAC 2024, “Ho’oulu Lāhui: Regenerating Oceania - Both Hineani and Jade, as a result of winning Te Matatini Herenga Waka Herenga Tangata in 2023, were invited to travel with Te Kapa Haka o Te Whānau-ā-Apanui as part of the Aotearoa delegation to Hawaii in June 2024.</image:title>
<image:caption>They were selected as Māori ambassadors to represent whānau, hapū, iwi and Aotearoa whānui. Both individuals are excited by the profound learnings and insights they gained from being a part of these discussions and experience, and the growing international awareness of the importance of indigenous thinking and ways of doing things. “The festival is incredibly relevant to not only indigenous communities themselves, but to the broader global community as we grapple with existential issues such as climate change and inequity.” shares Jade. Jade’s role as Rautaki Māori involves incorporating Mātauranga Māori into all of the Healthy Families East Cape and wider Healthy Families NZ initiatives, demonstrating the transformative power of Māori and indigenous worldviews. One of Jade’s highlights from FestPAC was that this approach was out in full force at the event, with all participants and ambassadors drawing from the strength of ancestral narratives, empowering us as an indigenous community to continue to move away from western ways of thinking and conventional ways of doing. “This festival has strengthened our relationship with our Pacific brothers and sisters. It has also instilled a desire to come back to Aotearoa and do what I can to support our culture and the health and wellbeing of our people.” Some of the greatest wins for our indigenous community as a result of this year’s FestPAC include cementing relationships with the Convention on International Trade in Endangered Species of Wild Fauna and Flora (CITES) - an opportunity to engage in international activities and discussions that protect endangered species, advocating for stronger regulations, promoting sustainable trade, and educating the Pacific; participating in international conversations around the addressing of climate change and equity, career and leadership opportunities for our people and empowering the voices of our rangatahi as future leaders of our countries and people. Healthy Families East Cape Manager, Tomairangi Higgins, believes that this event is just one of many potential and exciting opportunities for the team to participate in. The opportunity for Jade and Hineani to attend, and support our people in elevating conversations around Mātauranga Māori as prevention in a forum where creative arts are recognised as tools for wellbeing (self-esteem, confidence, self-efficacy, improved social connections and overall quality of life) brings immense excitement to not only Jade and Hineani but to our organisation as well.</image:caption>

<image:caption>With mahi that works across and throughout systems and shifting conditions so that our people can be healthier, it is ever-important to ensure we have the best backbone support for our busy team and office. Healthy Families East Cape are incredibly grateful to now have the expertise of the wonderful, Kim Koia, joining us as Executive Assistant and ensuring the inner most details of our mahi is taken care of. With over a decade in the beauty industry, Kim comes to us as a vibrant, community-minded individual who has thrived on building amazing connections with clients and whānau, “helping them feel good about themselves”. Enjoying spending her time with her own whānau and boasting a supportive tāne with three beautiful sons, Kim loves spending time in nature with them, gathering kai, hunting, handling, riding horses and embarking on adventures to keep her wairua happy. “What excites me about Healthy Families East Cape is that I get to step out of my comfort zone, learn, grow and be a part of an organisation and movement that contributes positively to our people and community.” Kim is a homegrown Tairāwhiti girl, with whakapapa ties to Te Aitanga a Māhaki, Te Whānau a Kai me Te Whakatōhea. “Central to Kim’s values is her innate ability to help and care for others,” shares Healthy Families East Cape Manager Tomairangi Higgins. The Healthy Families East Cape is delighted to have Kim in our team. Pop into our office in Treble Court for a visit and a kōrero with our Kim!</image:caption>

<image:caption>Healthy Families East Cape and Te Ao Hou Trust are privileged to welcome and introduce Hineani Campbell-Collier to the team as our new Kaupapa Innovator. It’s a full circle moment to have Hineani return to the East Cape/ Te Tairāwhiti. Hineani attended part of her primary school education at Te Kura o Tōrere, reconnecting with some of our Te Ao Hou kaimahi who knew Hineani and her whānau. Te Ao Hou Trust CEO, Linda Steel, says having Hineai return to her Ngai Tai whakapapa is an asset to our teams and communities. Linda believes that Hineani joining the Healthy Families movement is an wonderful opportunity to consolidate her education and gain hands on experience in her role as our Kaupapa Innovator. Hineani says she is very excited to gain hands on experience as the Kaupapa Innovator for Healthy Families East Cape, and to be able to give back to the communities and iwi that shaped who she is today. Hineani’s experience, education and skills will allow her to work towards actualising transformational change in places where we live, learn, work and play and contributing to the Healthy Families East Cape team, as part of the Healthy Families movement of passionate kaimahi that are dedicated to building leadership and capacity across our Kaupapa and communities for sustained prevention.</image:caption>
